OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn is part of a bipartisan group of federal legislators who have introduced a bill designed to prevent billions of dollars in waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
The Republican from Muskogee announced Monday that he is a co-sponsor of the Preventing and Reducing Improper Medicare and Medicaid Expenditures Act of 2013, or the PRIME Act. The bill is co-sponsored in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, a Democrat from Delaware.
Among other things, Coburn says the bill would enact stricter penalties for fraud, curb improper payments, expand the sharing of fraud data, and help states identify and prevent Medicaid overpayments.
Coburn says the bill would help prevent billions of dollars in lost health care dollars each year.
